I get asked all the time about the technology I use as a Virtual Teacher. With so many schools going virtual due to Covid-19, I’ve been asked a lot more frequently. I thought it would be a good idea to do a whole post about it. In addition, I compiled a Shop My Tech list below of the products I use with their Amazon affiliate links. (I make a small commission if you purchase through these links.) I also have a Shop My Office list below that, which includes items I use in my home office/classroom.
So, let’s get to my technology...
👩🏻💻FAST Internet is SO important. I would definitely recommend upgrading to the fastest internet you can afford. If possible, try to use a wired (Ethernet) connection since WiFi can sometimes be unstable. There’s nothing worse than slow internet or getting kicked out of your session when you’re trying to teach.
👩🏻💻The biggest thing I recommend is a second monitor. Sometimes I even use three, but a second is essential. I also have a portable monitor for when I’m out of my office and still need to work or teach.
👩🏻💻I also like to use my own webcam. The integrated ones on laptops are sometimes low quality. You can also get a tripod to hold it in case you want to teach from different angles or move around.
👩🏻💻I also use a document camera sometimes. It’s a good way to show a book or document that you only have a paper copy of, showing how to do MLA/APA citing, or for doing annotation. They are especially helpful for elementary teachers and math and science teachers.
👩🏻💻A Ring light is helpful to make you look nice.
👩🏻💻Many virtual teachers use a WebAround green screen to change their backgrounds, but it’s not necessary.
👩🏻💻 ManyCam is a great tool to use if you’re using more than one camera. SnapChatCam is fun too!
👩🏻💻I use gamer headphones that are comfy and have great sound quality.
👩🏻💻I have an external mic that I use sometimes too, but again that’s not necessary. Speaking of audio, getting some foam acoustic panels for your office really helps with the sound quality.
👩🏻💻Depending on your platform, a digital writing/drawing tablet that connects to your laptop is very nice. Our math teachers use them to solve problems on a virtual whiteboard.
👩🏻💻 If you’re going to use a lot of USB plug-in tech, you may need a USB expansion port.
👩🏻💻 Not necessarily technology, but a sign on the door is good for when you’re live and others may be home.
👩🏻💻 Another non-tech item I use is a WebAround green screen. This, with the software ManyCam, allows you to create virtual backgrounds and filters to be used on any video meeting platform if you’re not using one where it comes built-in.
I am a certified AppleTeacher and even worked at Apple for a few years. I use so many Apple Products that are so helpful while virtual teaching, but these are the ones I use the most:
iPad and ApplePencil - I use them for creating slides and documents and for grading. I can write on student essays and assignment.
AirPods Pro - I spend a lot of time on the phone, and it really helps to have wireless headphone. Plus they sound amazing when listening to music or podcasts.
